To suggest that The Primary 5 come on like vintage era Teenage Fanclub is an understatement. Then again, Paul Quinn, who with multi-instrumentalist Ryan Currie makes up Bellshill’s latest harmony-coated jangle-tastic export, used to be their (third) drummer, following a lengthy tenure as The Soup Dragons sticksman. With this follow up to 2004’s North Star debut engineered by Norman Blake and Raymond McGinley of that parish, Quinn and Currie duly turn in a breathless set of shimmering west-coast guitar sounds tempered by a downbeat small-town world-weariness worthy of latter-day Shack. This is cosily classic, if understatedly familiar fare, and while Quinn might not exactly grab the spotlight, The Primary 5 nevertheless provide some much needed sunshine on the dark side of the street.
